Pastor Kelvin continues our journey through the Gospel of Mark by teaching from Mark 2:18–28, where Jesus confronts religious expectations about fasting and the Sabbath.
As the Pharisees question why Jesus’ disciples do not fast like others, Jesus responds with a powerful illustration about new wine and old wineskins—revealing that something entirely new has arrived. The kingdom of God cannot simply be added onto old religious systems.
Later, when the disciples are accused of breaking the Sabbath, Jesus declares a profound truth: the Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. He then reveals His authority by proclaiming that the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.
This passage points to the transition from the old covenant to the new, where true rest is not found in religious performance but in Christ Himself.
In this message, we learn:
• Why Jesus challenged religious traditions
• What the “new wine” of the gospel really means
• How the Sabbath points us to deeper rest in Christ
• Why Jesus has authority over the law and the Sabbath
Jesus did not come to modify religion—He came to fulfill it and offer a new covenant through Himself.
